Sound advice, and the first part, at least sounds familiar, haha.
Can't wait to read your book! Loving the first chapters posted.

I should have guessed that from the name...
Another question, do the all the atavisms reoccur around the same generation? Like they remained dormant until Zanni's generation appeared, or do they just reoccur at separate times? Sorry if that was confusing...

Permalink Reply by Emma W. R. on October 15, 2011 at 9:31am What was going through your mind when you finished editing and rewriting and working and realized, this is the draft I want to publish?
And then when it actually was published?
When you see it in bookstores/on booklists?
Permalink Reply by Kat Mellon on October 15, 2011 at 9:51am I think the excitement really hit when I saw Darkness Surrounding in print for the first time. It was a pretty crazy moment. After all, the book had been nothing beyond a word document and some printed out sheets of paper until then. Having it look like a book seemed to instantly give it some credibility. Of course, the excitement has worn off slightly, and I'm actually in the process of re-designing the cover and adding in some special features (a brief history of New Mexico, pronunciation guide, map, etc).
It's neat to see my book listed online. As for realizing when to publish, I never had a moment where I said "this is so awesome and ready to go!" to myself. At a certain point, I did acknowledge that it had been through all the editing it could go through given the time I/my editor had available, and I knew that it was something I wouldn't be embarrassed to had published later on in life. It was ready in the sense that it was a solid story, but it's a rare occasion for a writer to be 100% satisfied with their work before publishing.
