Excerpts from Darkness Surrounding

*To clarify: I've edited the excerpt to the best of my ability and with much diligence. However, it has not seen a professional editor, so you may encounter minor errors.

How much did it cost you to self-publish? (I feel like an interrogator...)
Through CreateSpace, it cost me about $115 for the options I wanted enabled (expanded distribution, etc). Those are optional, and if I didn't care about selling beyond Amazon or in person, it would have been free. Buying author copies gets expensive, but it's for the sake of selling the book in person at signings and through mail orders. You recoup the cost at some point.

"Abandon your social life, invest in a speedy laptop, and turn on some good music!"

Sound advice, and the first part, at least sounds familiar, haha.

Can't wait to read your book! Loving the first chapters posted.

Oh and will you be making an Official book trailer for DS?
Good point. I hadn't really thought about it. I might get some people from UBC to send clips in. If not, well...I probably won't make one. We'll see. I'm sure not going to pay someone to make one.
If Zanni is an atavist, wouldn't that mean that her mother would have been too? Or is it not related to bloodline like that?
Good question! The answer is no. An atavism is a trait that pops up after a long period of absence. In the case of my trilogy, the traits of Daniel, helena & Co. essentially remained dormant for 500 years until they re-emerged in Zanni and the gang. Therefore, her mother is not an atavist, nor was her mother or her mother (etc).

Oh psh *facepalm*

I should have guessed that from the name...

Another question, do the all the atavisms reoccur around the same generation? Like they remained dormant until Zanni's generation appeared, or do they just reoccur at separate times?  Sorry if that was confusing...

Thought I responded to this, but I guess it didn't go through. The traits remained dormant until Zanni's generation.

What was going through your mind when you finished editing and rewriting and working and realized, this is the draft I want to publish?

And then when it actually was published?

When you see it in bookstores/on booklists?

I think the excitement really hit when I saw Darkness Surrounding in print for the first time. It was a pretty crazy moment. After all, the book had been nothing beyond a word document and some printed out sheets of paper until then. Having it look like a book seemed to instantly give it some credibility. Of course, the excitement has worn off slightly, and I'm actually in the process of re-designing the cover and adding in some special features (a brief history of New Mexico, pronunciation guide, map, etc).

It's neat to see my book listed online. As for realizing when to publish, I never had a moment where I said "this is so awesome and ready to go!" to myself. At a certain point, I did acknowledge that it had been through all the editing it could go through given the time I/my editor had available, and I knew that it was something I wouldn't be embarrassed to had published later on in life. It was ready in the sense that it was a solid story, but it's a rare occasion for a writer to be 100% satisfied with their work before publishing.
