High School Never Ends!

I'll admit that for the longest time, I was terrible at paying attention to detail. Therefore, it took me three - ok, more like four - years to realize that the high school that my characters go to wasn't even based off of anything in Albuquerque in terms of location and proximity to the Rio Grande River.

So last night, I was stuck with the BIG question: Where exactly was this middle class neighborhood with a large high school within walking distance of the Rio Grande?

I narrowed it down to three high schools - Rio Grande High School, Albuquerque High School, and Cibola High School. The first was out because it was too small and too out of the way, and the second would require the characters to spend a lot of time downtown (which has never been in the plan). This left Cibola, which was my rival high school back in the day. Oops. ;]

So there you have it, New Mexicans - a point of reference for your imagination while you read. Ugly brown and yellow uniforms and a close proximity to INTEL headquarters.

I took a quick look over the school's website and discovered the most, well, "epic" Mission Statement I've ever seen:

Is it just me, or is that hilarious?

I'll be taking a "field trip" with my camera sometime this week to get a sense of the new neighborhood and  locations along the Rio Grande. It'll be weird to replace my imagined "world" to fit an existing one, but I think it'll sit a whole lot better with New Mexican readers if they can relate to the settings and situations.
